FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is one treatment used in Chinese Medicine, it involves the insertion of small needles into specific points on the body.  Each acupuncture point has a different therapeutic effect on the body, combining different points allows your practitioner to customize your treatment.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

For most people acupuncture does not hurt, some people feel a quick pinch when the needles are first inserted but this sensation shouldn't last for more than a few seconds.  At Highland Heart we use the smallest needles available to reduce the chance of any pain, in fact many of our clients don't feel the needles at all.

WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?

Acupuncture can be used to treat many different conditions including: Digestive Issues, Pain, Insomnia/Trouble Sleeping, Women's Health ( Menstruation, Menopause, Fertility, Post Partum), Mental Health (Anxiety, Depression,PTSD)
If you're not sure if acupuncture can help you please contact us and we will be happy to provide more information.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

This can be a difficult question to answer because although there is significant clinical evidence that acupuncture is an effective therapy there is no conclusive research about exactly HOW it works.  The leading theory strongly supported by Dr. Daniel Keown is that the acupuncture channels coincide with the recently discovered fascial system.  The fascial system is the space between the connective tissues in the body, the connective tissues generate very small amounts of electricity when stimulated with the acupuncture needles, the electricity travels through the fascial system  and triggers the body's natural feedback systems.  This helps return the body to a state of balance or, as it's known in Western Medicine, homeostasis.

DO YOU DIRECT BILL?

Yes, we are set up for direct billing with most major insurance providers.  We encourage you to check your plan prior to booking to ensure that acupuncture is covered and find out if your insurance requires you to pay a percentage of the cost.

HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP MY CLIENTS WITH THEIR PAIN?

Acupuncture does have some analgesic effect, but the real magic comes when combining Acupuncture treatments with manual therapies such as massage, chiropractic, or osteopathy.  Acupuncture helps with the imbalances that may be preventing your clients from healing and getting the most out of your treatments, our treatments can improve your clients digestion, sleep, and stress levels which can significantly hinder the healing process.

HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP MY CLIENTS WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH?

Acupuncture works by helping to regulate the body, activating natural feedback systems.  Among the many things Acupuncture treatments help the body to regulate are serotonin and dopamine levels.  Over the course of several weekly treatments clients' bodies learn to regulate these levels independently, which when combined with counseling therapy, is an effective treatment for many mental health concerns including anxiety and depression.
